A Christmas morning tragedy was averted by Troopers early this morning when Troopers detected a wrong-way driver on Route 93 southbound, near Exit 40 in Wilmington. Troopers paralleled the vehicle on the other side of the highway and were able to eventually put down stop sticks in the Medford area. Luckily, the roads were almost completely empty due to the holiday and early hour.
The suspect vehicle hit multiple stop sticks and all four tires were eventually deflated, however the male driver continued southbound driving on his rims. The suspect eventually made it into Leverett Circle and entered Storrow Drive again in the wrong direction.
For a short time, Troopers lost visual contact with the vehicle, however they were able to locate it minutes later in a MGH parking lot where the vehicle was stashed in an attempt to hide from Troopers. Troopers conducted a thorough search of the area on foot and successfully located the man, who was heavily intoxicated. The suspect who State Police Officials would only identify as a 36-year old male from Reading was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
He continued to struggle even after being cuffed and could seen being non-compliant with Troopers as he was being loaded into a vehicle. The suspect was transported to Tunnles Barracks for processing. He was then transferred from the Barracks to Tufts Medical Center by Boston EMS for evaluation.
The suspect was issued a Summons for OUI, Failure to Stop and other related charges. Truly a great job by everyone involved, through the professionalism and hard work of the agencies that responded, no one was injured by this dangerous, reckless operator.
