Mass State Police Successfully Capture Driver of Connecticut Crown Vic After 50+ Mile Long Pursuit Overnight

At approximately 01:18 hours on Wednesday November 17th, a Trooper located a vehicle that a witness reported as being operated erratically on Route 90 Eastbound in the area of Hopkinton. You can listen to the full radio traffic below:

The Trooper tried to pull the vehicle over however the driver failed to stop and continued driving. A pursuit was authorized by Troop C Headquarters (for our Boston readers, Troop C covers central Mass and part of Metrowest).

The fleeing vehicle continued to be pursued by Troopers, but when they entered a construction work zone in the area of Southborough, the pursuit was terminated with Troopers turning off their lights, sirens and dropping back. After the Trooper observed the suspect vehicle had cleared the road construction zone on 90 EB in Natick he again requested permission to reengage the chase.

Troop C Headquarters authorized the Trooper to reengage and notified Troop H for assistance and Troop H Headquarters assumed command and control of the pursuit. Troopers from across the area, including K-9 units converged on pike with some who responded positioning themselves along the pursuit route ahead of the approaching suspect.

By leapfrogging the suspect, Troopers were able to both stop motorist from entering the highway keeping them safe from the erratic driver and also deployed tire deflation devices at multiple points.

Between the start of H Troop and the eventual capture, Troopers were successful in deflating all four tires of the suspect vehicle. The final blow came when a spike strip caught the suspects last rear tire on 93 Southbound near the Southbay Shopping center. The damaged tires caused the vehicle to eventually have to stop on Rt 93 South in Dorchester shortly before Neponset Circle.

The operator of the vehicle was evaluated on scene by Boston EMS, taken into custody and transported back to the State Police-Charlton Barracks for booking.

The suspect has now been identified as MATTHEW GOEWEY, 32 years old of Torrington Connecticut. He faces the following charges:

  1. negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  2. Failure to stop for police
  3. Marked lanes violation
  4. Negligent operation in a work zone
  5. Failure to stop/yield to traffic signals.

He is expected in Westborough District Court for arraignment later this morning.
