On Monday, February 28, 2022 at approximately 03:30 hours companies from the Boston Fire Department responded to Maverick Street for reports of a fire.
The 6-alarm fire in ripped through three multi-family homes, thankfully no one was injured. The crews worked relentlessly to stop the fire that roared throughout the buildings. One person was rescued from the second floor, and 25 people were displaced.
Boston firefighters tackled the flames on while battling frigid temperatures, which posed challenges for the crews. The water used to extinguish the fire created quite a slippery scene, as it froze in the low temperatures. The water from the hoses deployed even caused one engine to freeze over.
Boston Fire spent more than three hours putting out the blaze, with the help of neighboring Fire crews and apparatuses from Cambridge, Chelsea, Newton, Brookline, Quincy, Somerville, and Needham. The Red Cross assisted in locating emergency housing for the individuals who were displaced in the cold. A Massachusetts State Police officer from F Troop, Logan Airport helped to evacuate residents as well.
The fire department remained on scene and continued to tackle hot spots into the morning. By the time the sun rose, more than 100 firefighters had worked to fight the massive blaze. With all crews on deck to depart, there were no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
