At approximately 21:15 hours Thursday April 21 2022, Boston Police Officers from District A-1, Boston EMS and Boston Fire responded to the area of 357 Washington Street in Downtown Crossing for reports of an outdoor fire with a person possibly also bruning. When responders arrived they found a horrific sight, a homeless man was completely engulfed in flames running through the streets.

He was quickly extinguished and EMTs from Boston EMS transported him to a local burn center where he is expected to survive. A preliminary investigation including eyewitness accounts points to a tragic situation where it is believed the victim’s own cigarette caused the blaze to start while he was sleeping. At this time no further information is available and the incident is under review by the Boston Police and Boston Fire FIU.
